La Palma

Fuencaliente de La Palma

Fuencaliente de La Palma is one of the most impressive areas of the island due to its volcanic landscape. Notable highlights include the San Antonio Volcano and the Teneguía Volcano, which reflect the island’s recent origins. Very close by are the famous Fuencaliente Salt Pans and the Lighthouse, where the sea and lava meet in a unique landscape.

Our town. Our refuge

Fuencaliente de La Palma is one of the most spectacular and least crowded corners of the island. Located at its southern tip, it stands out for its almost “otherworldly” landscape: young volcanoes, black lava fields, vineyards grown on volcanic ash, pine forests, and rugged coastlines.

It is an ideal destination for those who enjoy nature, hiking and seaside gastronomy.

Landscapes

What makes Fuencaliente special is its striking visual contrast.

The landscape is defined by recent volcanoes, with the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge and cones such as San Antonio and Teneguía, where it is possible to walk among still highly visible lava flows.

The Salt Flats and the Lighthouse probably form the most iconic image of southern La Palma: the combination of white salt, black lava and the blue Atlantic surrounding the lighthouse creates a unique scene.

Volcanic vineyards add a distinctive character to the surroundings, with vines growing on black volcanic gravel and producing the renowned local Malvasía wine. In just a few kilometres, the landscape changes dramatically, shifting from Canary pine forests to cliffs and almost lunar-looking volcanic scenery.

Hiking

Route of the Volcanoes (GR-131)
It is the main route in Fuencaliente and one of the most well-known in the Canary Islands. It follows the volcanic ridge to the south of La Palma, offering constant views of the ocean and spectacular craters. Many hikers complete the section from Refugio El Pilar to Fuencaliente. It is one of the most impressive hikes in the archipelago.

ANAMCARA – Fuencaliente Lighthouse
This is a relatively accessible route that allows you to explore the crater and descend towards the lighthouse and the salt flats. It is an ideal option for those looking for a short trek with striking landscapes. It can be done on foot or by bus (it is advisable to check schedules).

Coastal trails
There are several paths connecting areas such as Los Canarios, La Zamora, Puntalarga and the Lighthouse, combining volcanic coastline with small urban settlements.

It is recommended to always check the status of trail access before undertaking any route.

Beaches

Echentive Beach (Playa Nueva)
It is one of the most unique beaches in the area, formed after the Teneguía eruption in 1971. It stands out for its black sand, wild surroundings and its three natural pools protected by lava, creating a unique landscape.

La Zamora Beach
It is the most popular beach in Fuencaliente, divided into Zamora Grande and Zamora Chica. It is an ideal place to enjoy a morning swim and find nearby places to eat.

Punta Larga
Quieter and less well-known, it combines black volcanic rock with an authentic fishing village atmosphere, preserving a traditional and uncrowded character.
